Another Oil Painting

I am still in painting mode with this being the start of my second oil painting for this Iris,  from a photograph I took some time ago.  The original plant was growing at my parents home and prior to the house being sold after their passing in 2005, I dug up a few bulbs and now have it growing in my garden.  The painting has progressed since this photograph was taken and I still have a way to go - roses I feel, are a much easier, or should I say, simpler flower to paint.

Rose - Completed.

I have decided to call this painting "After the Rain", a title suggested to me by a member of a painting list I am on, and because I had taken the original photograph of the rose on New Year's Day when Brisbane was experiencing a great deal of rain which resulted in horrendous flooding.

I have already commenced another oil painting and then I think it will be time to "scratch"!!!!

Rose in Oils - WIP

I have really been enjoying using my oil paints again, although so much messier than working on scratchboard and I also need a lot more workroom.  I have enjoyed working on this painting so much that I have not been able to leave it alone, and although not finished,  I am already planning on what I want to paint next.....I do want to start a scratchboard too but guess I will have to get the oil painting out of my system first.

As of this morning here is a few more hours work, and as you can see I still have a way to go.  This board is an 8" x 10" - originally a binned scratchboard that has been sanded back!!!!!!!!

A few things.

Although I have not done any scratchboard work since finishing the tiger - "Morning Swim", I have been keeping myself occupied by finally painting, which I haven't done in such a long time especially since becoming addicted to scratchart!!!!!   I decided to drag out my oil paints, having used them only once in the past 12 months and years and years prior as I had changed over to acrylics - I have always loved painting roses and I decided it was about time to paint one to see if I could still handle painting with oils.  I took the photograph of this beautiful rose a few weeks ago and here is where I am at right now.

I love the whimsical designs of Jan McCraw (Ladybug Creations) and I painted the centre design on this shopping bag quite some time ago and thought it was finished until I had the bright idea to paint another design in the right-hand panel, which now means I need to paint one more in the left-hand panel.......when? - I do not know!  I have painted more than 70 of Jan's designs over the years.

And finally, I was asked to put on a display of some of my scratchboard work at quite a large library south of where I live and due to the recent Queensland floods, I was unable to go back there to take photographs until last week, here is just one which is not the best due to the boards being displayed behind glass.

Morning Swim - Finished.

Due to the current horrific Queensland/Brisbane floods and people being advised to stay indoors and to refrain from driving on the roads, I have been able to complete this board.  At least today, Friday 14th January the Brisbane River has started to recede and a few people have been able to return to their homes for the massive job of cleaning up.

Morning Swim WIP - Another Update.

With all the rain we've been having here in south-east Queensland, and with Brisbane now on flood alert, I have had plenty of time indoors which has enabled me to do quite a lot more work to this piece,  the next update should be of the completed board.

Morning Swim - WIP Update

Here's a pic to show a little more work done to the tiger although I have done quite a few more hours 'scratching' since I took this photograph.

 Showing some of the detail.

Morning Swim - WIP

I have managed to do quite a few more hours work to this board and have also come up with the title "Morning Swim".  As you can see I still have a long way to go.

Yesterday I delivered 12 of my scratchboards to a library situated near a huge shopping centre for a display - a request by the Logan Art Society which I joined in August last year.  Unfortunately I forgot to take my camera so that I could take a few photographs of the display and will head back there sometime this week especially to take a few.  As I was setting everything up I had people asking lots of questions about scratchboard so it should create a lot of interest.

New Year - new scratchboard

Happy New Year everyone, although to those Queenslanders in the 22 flood ravaged towns who have lost everything in the State's worst ever floods, it definitely is a sad start to the New Year and hopefully they will soon be able to return to their homes.  There has been no rain here in Brisbane today....Sunday 2nd January 2011 although it did rain again yesterday.....I think we have only seen the sun twice in the last couple of weeks which is unusual for Queensland which is known as the "Sunshine State".

If you would care to see just how devastating the floods are, I have posted a link below:-

My news is that the 3 scratchart patterns I promised to have ready in the New Year are now completed, they are "Green Eyes", "Lola" and "Elegant Rose".  I am all "scratch patterned" out, although I still have one left to do for the Aus. Fine Art & Decorative Painting magazine.  The deadline isn't until February so I have some time to work on a board that I have wanted to do for some time.

I prepared the board last night by transferring the line drawing to a 12" x 16" board and managed to do a little work to it today with a long way to go.
